Crowns

Crowns

A crown may be necessary if a tooth is so decayed or damaged that a simple filling cannot repair it. The crown will fit over the prepared tooth and restore it to its previous function and appearance. At Fort Union Family Dental, we also place a crown, when necessary, after a root canal has been performed on a tooth, as the tooth is often weakened after the procedure. Finally, the crown can protect a tooth with a large filling or is prone to breaking due to a large cavity. In these cases, the crown will hold the tooth together and prevent the tooth from splitting further.

Dental crowns can treat several common oral health issues, such as:

  • Cosmetic imperfections like deep stains or cracks that make an otherwise healthy smile look older or not as aesthetically appealing as it should be
  • Severely worn-down teeth due to bruxism
  • Teeth are broken due to trauma or everyday wear and tear on the enamel
  • Broken teeth that can’t be repaired with a filling alone
  • Teeth with extensive decay or infection cannot be treated with a filling alone

The Procedure for Dental Crowns

To place a dental crown, our dentist will first shape the tooth to make it able to receive the crown by removing its outer enamel layer. Then, they will make an impression of your teeth to send to the lab for manufacturing. Meanwhile, a temporary crown will be placed to protect the prepared tooth. Finally, on the next appointment, the temporary crown will be replaced by the permanent crown and then be cemented into place at your next appointment.

Most patients find their temporary crown feeling bulky and awkward at first. However, most patients find that this subsides within a few days. It is essential to keep your temporary crown in place so that it doesn’t become a choking hazard or get lost before you get your permanent crown placed. Brush and floss it just like your other teeth to keep it clean and healthy while it is in place.

The Benefits of Dental Crowns

A crown covers a tooth above the gum line, protecting it from further damage or decay. This restoration is typically used after a large cavity damages the tooth and needs something more substantial than a filling. Without a crown, the damaged tooth would be weak and more at risk of extensive damage.

In addition to preventing further damage to the tooth, crowns also help restore the appearance of your smile. Our dentist may recommend a crown if your tooth has a large crack or other structural damage that affects its appearance. They are also commonly used to hold a dental bridge in place or cover an implant post.

Patients who undergo a dental crown procedure must practice proper oral hygiene habits at home to ensure the long-term health of their restored smile. For more information, visit Fort Union Family Dental located at 8915 S 700 E Ste 103, Sandy, Utah 84070, or call (801) 562-2147.
